Lesson 05 of 12

The Traffic System

Why Traffic Matters More Than Most Founders Think

You can build a perfect product. If no one can find it, you have zero users and zero revenue.

Traffic is not luck. It is a system. And for a one-person company, picking the right channel is more important than being present on every channel.

The Five Traffic Channels

Search (SEO)

People search for a problem. Your page appears. Slow to start, high value long-term. Works while you sleep.

Community

Reddit, forums, Facebook groups, Discord. Build genuine trust first. The conversion comes later.

Social media

Twitter/X, LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok. High effort, platform-dependent. Good for brand, hard for direct sales.

Referral

Other websites, blogs, directories, partnerships. Someone else sends you their audience. Scales passively.

Owned

Email list, push notifications. You own the contact. No algorithm between you and your audience.

The One-Person Company Rule for Traffic

You cannot do all five well at once.

Pick one primary channel per project. Build there until it works. Then, optionally, add a second.

Wrong: Post on all platforms → get thin traction everywhere Right: Go deep on one channel → get real traction → add second

How to Choose a Primary Channel

Match the channel to your content type and your product's user intent:

People searching for answers → SEO People with a niche hobby or problem → Community People who respond to personality → Social media Product for other website owners → Referral / backlinks High-repeat-purchase product → Build owned list first

For This Experiment

The $1 OPC Experiment's primary channel is search + referral — through articles on Ordinary Man Trying and links from other sites. Social media is secondary, used for sharing updates but not as the main acquisition engine.

"Products determine why users stay. Distribution determines whether users can find you."
